Content and context

Powers of attorney to collect debts, manage and sell ships, and perform a range of other tasks. There are also several deeds of substitution, transferring the authority of a power of attorney to a third party. Some of the documents were made by individuals who required an attorney to manage their affairs while they were absent from the Far East.

There is a covering letter from W. & T. Gemmell & Co., Canton, to Jardine Matheson, Canton, 16 September 1837, which also encloses an extract of letters from the company to Henry Constable and to Lyall, Matheson & Co., both dated Canton, 16 September 1837. The documents are in a wrapper addressed to Jardine, Matheson & Co. and labelled as containing papers received from William Gemmell on 20 September 1837.

The first power of attorney was granted by Charles Frederick Still of London, merchant, to Jardine, Matheson & Co. of Hong Kong, dated London, 14 July 1870, and includes annotations and sections completed in pencil. The second power of attorney is by Alphonse Bonnal, 6 October 1870, but does not include the name of the attorney. There is also a letter from Bonnal to Keswick, dated Hong Kong, 9 May 1868, which originally enclosed a scrip and proxy for one share in the Union Insurance Society and a scrip and power of attorney for twenty-four shares in the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (neither item is included). A note on front of the envelope records that it previously also included a power of attorney for John Skinner, but that this has been removed.
