The principal author is W.H. Smith & Son, New York. There is also an abstract of a letter from Theodore F. Lewis, New York, [to Augustine Heard & Co.] of 14 July 1868, and an order from Richard Briggs, Boston, to Augustine Heard & Co., Boston, 8 January 1868. One of the letters is incomplete.

Copies (including press and printed copies) and extracts of correspondence between Augustine Heard & Co. and Butterfield & Swire, Butterfield Bros and R.S. Butterfield & Co. The correspondents include Augustine Heard & Co., Shanghai and Yokohama; R.S. Butterfield, Bradford; Butterfield & Swire, Shanghai; Butterfield Bros, Bradford; George Basil Dixwell, C.E. Endicott and Robert I. Fearon (of Augustine Heard & Co., Shanghai); John A. Fraser, Yokohama; A.O. Gay (agent for Augustine Heard & Co., Yokohama); Augustine Heard Jr., Dieppe, London and Paris; A.F. Heard, Hong Kong; George F. Heard, Hong Kong; R.S. Butterfield & Co., Bradford; and J. Swire, Shanghai. There is also some correspondence between members of Augustine Heard & Co. The letters are accompanied by a copy of an agreement between Augustine Heard Jr and Butterfield Brothers [1864], and accounts and invoices exchanged between Augustine Heard & Co., R.S. Butterfield & Co., and A.O. Gay, dated Bradford, Yokohama and elsewhere, 1866-1871.
