Title Out-correspondence
Reference MS JM/C
Covering Dates 1800–1913 (with some photocopies made in c. 1983)
Extent and Medium 529 volumes + 1 envelope
Content and context

This series contains volumes of fair and press copies of the out-correspondence of Jardine, Matheson & Co. and related companies. The series is comprised of three principal parts:

1. Letters sent from Jardine Matheson's various offices in the Far East (C8-37, C41-57). These include large sets of letters from Hong Kong (C8, C9, C12, C15-34, C37) and Shanghai (C41-53), sent to specific places or concerning particular companies or matters of business.

2. Letters sent by individual members and agents of Jardine Matheson (C1, C3, C4-7, C38-40).

3. Letters sent by companies connected to Jardine Matheson: Yrissari & Co. (C2), Augustine Heard & Co. (C58), and Thomas Hunt & Co. (C59).

The first two parts include some correspondence designated 'private letters', which was exchanged between partners of the firm on matters of business.

Further information

The series that began as private letters was later renamed semi-official letters. These letters can be found in Series J.
