A memorandum regarding 'Towage Cases in which China Nav[igation] Co. Steamers were assisted by Steamers belonging to Local Companies or rendered assistance to them'. The document describes the cases of the 'Foochow' on a voyage from Newchwang to Swatow needing to be towed by the 'Appin', 3 November 1877; S.S. 'Hwai Yuen' being towed by S.S. 'Tientsin', 12 March 1878; and the 'Chefoo' on a voyage from Shanghai to Swatow receiving assistance from S.S. 'Chintung', 30 August 1880. The description of the second case quotes from a letter from F.S. Swire of Butterfield & Swire, the owners of the 'Tientsin', to the China Merchants Co. regarding compensation for losses incurred in aiding the latter's vessel. |
