Content and context

Fair copies of invoices. The volume is endorsed on the spine 'Silk'. There is an index at the beginning listing the invoices by the name of the ship that delivered the goods. The ships featured are the 'Amazone', 'Amoy', 'Anadyr', 'Ava', 'Avoca', 'Baroda', 'Behar', 'Bokham', 'Bombay', 'Canton', 'Cathay', 'China', 'Deccan', 'Delta', 'Djemnah', 'Geelong', 'Glengyle', 'Golconda', 'Gwalior', 'Hoogly', 'Indus', 'Iraouaddy', 'Kashgar', 'Malacca', 'Malwa', 'Meikong', 'Menelaus', 'Menzaleh', 'Mirzapore', 'Nizam', 'Orissa', 'Peiho', 'Pera', 'Peshawar', 'Provence', 'Sarpedon', 'Sindh', 'Surat', 'Teheran', 'Thibet', 'Tigre', 'Travencore', 'Venetia' and 'Zambesi'. The main good is silk, but there are also invoices for cocoons, gallnuts and silk worm eggs. The goods were shipped to Canton, London, Lyon, Madras, Marseilles and Milan. Most of them were consigned to or transported on account and risk of Arlès-Dufour & Co. and Jardine, Matheson & Co., but there are also invoices featuring Arbuthnot & Co.; B.A. Barretto & Co.; Changko; Chanko; Choping; Chun Tsun; Feelo; Kung Wo; Matheson & Co.; Sam Mendel; Pang E Yah; Sin Nien Cheong; and Edward Ward.
