Content and context

Whereas William Barber of Exeter by will dated 5 August 1775 devised certain land in Shefford to his nephews Samuel and John Fennell to the use of his nephew William Fennell for life, afterwards to his heirs male and their heirs for ever; and whereas John Phipps the elder of Shefford has agreed with William Fennell, now of Little Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, for the purchase of the land in question, and it has been agreed to suffer a common recovery; William Fennell and Martha his wife, John Fennell of Widdington, Essex, George Fennell of Little Berkhamstead, John Phipps junior of Campton, Bedfordshire and Penelope his wife, and James Dobson of Broxbourne, Hertfordshire and Martha his wife (sons, daughters and sons-in-law of William Fennell) release to Thomas Augustus Ridlington of Gough Square, London the land in question in his possession by a sale dated the previous day [Doc 222], to him and his heirs to the use of him and his heirs, and it is agreed that William Cooch of Baldock, Hertfordshire shall institute proceedings for common recovery of the land [Doc 220]. Witnesses: for William Fennell, Martha Fennell, John Fennell, George Fennell, John Phipps junior, Penelope Phipps, James Dobson, Martha Dobson and William Cooch: Edward Cooch, Robert Cooch of Baldock; for Thomas Augustus Ridlington: C. Lucas, Joseph Strong, clerks to Mr Ridlington; for John Phipps senior, John Field, Edward Cooch. On the back is a receipt for the consideration money signed by William Fennell. Witnesses: Edward Cooch, Robert Cooch. Eleven seals are attached.
