Content and context

Whereas by Indenture dated 28 September 1683 [Doc 196(1)] Grace Shettleworth of Writtle and Robert Shettleworth of the same let to Joseph Westwood of the same certain lands in Writtle for a term of five hundred years at a peppercorn rent, with a proviso for redemption by payment of a certain sum by certain dates, which sum was not paid, the lands being vested in Joseph Westwood; and whereas Robert Shettleworth of Great Baddow, Essex, by Indenture dated 1 November 1656 assigned to John Sawen of Little Waltham, Essex, certain land in Ging Margarett, Essex, vested in Jeremy Westwood father of Joseph Westwood, for the residue of a term of two thousand years; and whereas Grace Shettleworth and Robert Shettleworth agreed that these lands should be part of the security for the sum owed; and whereas by Indenture dated 23 October 1693 Joseph Westwood assigned to Robert Clough of Boreham these and other lands for the remainder of the respective terms; Robert Clough assigns to John Rotchell of Writtle the lands in question, to him and his heirs for the remainder of the respective terms, provided that if Robert Shettleworth pays to John Rotchell a certain sum by a certain date the agreement is void.
