Content and context

Cyril Edric Tomkinson (1886-1968) was born on 15 May 1886, and educated at Dulwich College and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge (B.A., 1908; M.A., 1912). He entered Wells Theological College in 1910, and was ordained deacon in 1910 and priest in 1911. Tomkinson was Vicar of St Stephen's, Lewisham, 1930-1934; St Bartholomew's, Brighton, 1934-1937; All Saints, Clifton, Bristol, 1939-1943; and All Saints, Margaret Street, London, 1943-1951. He died on 5 June 1968. Tomkinson was Anglo-Catholic in religion; it has been recalled of him that he described the style of the worship performed at All Saints, Margaret Street, as 'music by Mozart, choreography by Fortescue, decor by Comper, but libretto by Cranmer'.

With notes by Tomkinson concerning this relationship with Sassoon, letters and postcards from a few other correspondents, and printed items.

Presented by the Estate of the Revd Cyril Tomkinson, through the Revd Nigel Hancock.
