Hermann Justus Braunholtz was born in Cambridge on 12 October 1888, the son of Eugen Gustav Wilhelm Braunholtz, University Lecturer in French and later Reader in Romance, and his wife Elisabeth Charlotte Dorothea, née Breul. He was educated at T. R. Goodchild's Preparatory School in Cambridge and at Oundle School, before reading Classics and Modern and Medieval Languages at St John's College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1911 and M.A. in 1919. He served as a Lance Corporal in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War. He joined the staff of the British Museum, London, in 1913, and was Keeper of the Department of Ethnography from 1938 to 1953. He served as President of the Royal Anthropological Institute and the International African Institute, and was appointed C.B.E. in 1951. He died on 4 June 1963.

Postage stamps. Ordinary and airmail postage stamps issued by 'France Libre'. The French territories represented are Afrique Equatoriale Française, Cameroun, Djibouti, établissements Français dans l'Inde, Iles Wallis et Futuna, Madagascar, Nouvelle Caledonie, Oceanie, St Pierre et Miquelon and Reunion. The stamps are mint, and have been extracted from a booklet and mounted on backing sheets. With a letter, also mounted, from Tony Mayer of the Service des Timbres, France Combattante, to Braunholtz, 20 January 1943, presenting the stamps as a token of appreciation for assistance given in the preparation of the designs. 168 stamps + letter, on 13 sheets. |
