| Content and context |
The forces are assembled, "and a magnificent sight it is to see the fleets of the two greatest naval powers in Europe assembled for purpose of resisting the lawless aggression of the barbarians of the North". Death of his Colour Sergeant "who is one's right hand man" from cholera, "I read the funeral service over his corps, which was them launched into the sea with two 18-pound shot sewn up with it". Sends list of commanders, in case anyone can obtain interest, refers to social events in Northumberland. "We are to land with three days provisions cooked, and no one is to be allowed to take more than can be carried on the person. Consequently all of us are busily employed devising dodges for strapping our greatcoats and blankets on our backs ... no tents will be landed with us at first". |
