Christopher E. Blackett: Letters to his parents from the Crimea

Title Letter to father, in front of Sebastopol
Reference MS Add.9587/29
Covering Dates Feb. 1855
Content and context

Very pleased with his transfer, "more especially as it has been without paying any difference". Sebastopol is stronger than ever, the field works have been strengthened, Russian engineer officers are first rate, also their artillery, "so if we manage to take the place eventually it will not be done without great loss of life". Does not believe rumours of peace and thinks British are honour-bound to take Sebastopol, whatever the cost. British troops are very reduced in numbers, a lot is owed to the French.
