| Content and context |
Sir Colin Campbell has come to take command and Turkish reinforcements have arrived. The batteries have opened on Sebastopol, but there are other forts to be taken, so the war may last longer than anticipated. Thinks it must be sensational news in England, "owing to there being so many members of the leading families of the country engaged in it". The only Northumberland men he knows of are Captain Brandling of the Artillery and Sir Edward Blackett's son. |
