Christopher E. Blackett: Letters to his parents from the Crimea

Title Letter to father, Steamship 'Hydaspes', Balbeck Bay, near Sebastopol
Reference MS Add.9587/12
Covering Dates 29 Sep. 1854–30 Sep. 1854
Content and context

Has been sent on board to recover from low fever and jaundice, the tents were not landed for several days, then had to be returned to the ships, as the pack horses had been left in Bulgaria, so the troops are suffering from exposure and insufficient food. Russians have retreated to Sebastopol, they seem very fine soldiers.
