Content and context

John Bois (1561-1644) was a biblical translator whose main legacy were the notes that he made during the discussions relating to the formation of the 1611 King James Bible. This correspondence concerns the attempts to establish provenance of a diary of John Bois, attempts to find a suitable institution to hold it and its eventual donation to the Cambridge University Library by Louisa Howes.

3 From an official in the diocese of Ely to [Revd Francis Howes], Ely. Regrets that there is no material in the cathedral library to justify the acceptance of John Boys' diaries as a gift, incomplete. 28 Sep. 1842
4 From Louisa Howes to 'Dr Bensly' [?elder brother of Robert Lubbock Bensly], no place. 'I think from what your brother says, that Dr John Boys' book could be deposited nowhere better than in Cambridge University Library'; is confident that her father [Charles Howes, d. 1880, son of Francis] would have approved her decision; will pass the MS on as soon as 'Mr Manning' returns it. 3 Apr. 1881
5 From Louisa Howes to Dr Bensly, no place. Mr Amyot's visit has confirmed her decision to present the Boys MS to the UL; Bensly may call for it, and have any related MSS in her father's hand. 7 Apr. 1881
