Content and context

The Society was a student body founded in 1875 which lasted until 1883. The President was Neville Goodman, M.A., of Peterhouse, a nonconformist. The Society's Rules outlined its support for 'the opening of all fellowships and emoluments, college and university offices, and degrees to all members of the University without distinction of religious opinion'. It also sought 'placing the relations of Church and State on a basis consistent with religious equality'.

Norman Capper Hardcastle, d. 1893 (see MS.Add.6663), was admitted pensioner at Downing College on 6 Oct. 1877, and matriculated in Michaelmas of that year.

Presented by Prof. Courtney Kenny, 1917.
