Content and context

James Dixon, F.R.C.S. (1813-1896) was elected a member of the College of Surgeons in 1836, and an honorary FRCS in 1843. As a young man he spent two years (1836-38) on the Continent, principally in study and training at Vienna and Paris. He was assistant surgeon of St. Thomas's Hospital between 1848 and 1852, and for many years consulting surgeon at the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital, becoming one of the best known ophthalmologists of his generation. He retired in 1870 to Dorking, where he died on 3 January 1896. He was author of A guide to the practical study of diseases of the eye (1855, 3rd edition 1866) and a frequent contributor to Notes and Queries.

The following letters were presented to Cambridge University Library by the naturalist, traveller and author F.H.H. Guillemard (1852-1933), in 1927 (Add.6604) and 1928 (Add.6608-09).

Letters from James Dixon to his father John sent whilst he was travelling, mostly on the Continent. The letters have been guarded and bound. All are originals, and are addressed to John Dixon at 50 Fenchurch Street, London, except for /36 which is addressed to 6 Mecklenburgh Square. They give a detailed account of James Dixon's foreign travels, particularly of his sojourns in Vienna and Paris
