Content and context

Henry St George (1581-1644) was born on 27 January 1581, the eldest son of Sir Richard St George. He was created Rouge Rose pursuivant-extraordinary in May 1610; Bluemantle pursuivant-in-ordinary on 23 December 1611; and Richmond herald on 22 March 1616. At the commencement of the civil war he attended the royal standard and remained with the king at Oxford, where he was created a doctor of medicine on 6 May 1643. He was made a Garter king-of-arms in April 1644. St George died at Brasenose College on 5 November 1644, and was buried in the cathedral of Christ Church, Oxford.

In 1628 St George drew up a 'Catalogue of the Nobility of England', which was later used in A new catalogue of the Dukes, Marquesses, Earls, Viscounts, Barons, etc., published in 8 volumes by Thomas Walkley (London, 1658). St George carried out heraldic visitations throughout the country, some of which have been published.

'Visitation of Cambridgeshire taken by Henry St George, Richmond Heralde of Armes Anno Dom. 1619', a copy of the heraldic visitation, containing coats of arms in pen-and-ink, 96 folios. There is an index on folios 4-5. Inside the front cover is the bookplate of George, Earl Macartney.

Presented by Louis C.G. Clarke, 1925.
