Content and context

Thomas Marriott (d. 1708), rector of Little Canfield, Essex, 1665-1690, later of St Margaret Pattens, London.

Autograph copies of 70 letters, 168 folios. The letters are mostly to Marriott's sister (or possibly sister-in-law) Hannah, wife of Sir Thomas Pilkington, Lord Mayor of London, 1689-1691. The remainder are to Sir Thomas Pilkington (nos 45, 57 and 60); Pilkington's sons, Samuel (no. 67) and William (no. 68), and daughter, H- (no. 63); Marriott's daughter Mrs Ballett (no. 69) and her husband John Ballett (no. 70); Richard Baxter (no. 65); and Joseph Crowther, Principal of St Mary Hall, Oxford (no. 66).

Nos 65-70 are written from the back of the book. There is a list of contents in Marriott's hand giving the theme or occasion of each letter. Up to 1679 the writer spells his name 'Marriot'; from 1680 he uses the spelling 'Marriott' and has altered all earlier signatures to conform to this. On fo. 1v: 'Chas: K: Probert Nov, 1867 Newport Essex'. Above this has been added: 'W. Fuller Maitland Given to him by '. On fo. 1r in large letters is written 'Thomas'.

Purchased 1922.
