Content and context

Richard Mackenzie Bacon (1775-1844), musician, journalist and writer, was born at Norwich, where he attended the free school. In 1793 he established a connection with the Norwich Mercury, of which he later became editor (1816) and principal proprietor. In 1813 Bacon and Bryan Donkin obtained a patent for a new printing machine, which was described in Bacon's publication. As well as the Mercury, Bacon was also proprietor and editor of the Quarterly musical magazine and review, which was first published in London in 1818. He also helped to establish the Norwich Musical Festival. Bacon died at Cossey, near Norwich, on 27 November 1844.
