Content and context

The records make reference to three lords of the manor of Forncett, Norfolk (see MSS.Add.5923-5924): Charles Howard, 11th Duke of Norfolk (1746-1815), Bernard Edward Howard, 12th Duke (1765-1842), and Henry Charles Howard, 13th Duke (1791-1856).

Manors had two courts. The court baron was concerned with the customs of the manor. It was run for the lord of the manor by his steward, and dealt with matters such as the transfer of land and the duties and services owed to the manor lord by his tenants. The court leet dealt with minor crimes and the more important cases arising from the administration of the manor.

MS Add.5908 Court book of the manor of Forncett, Norfolk, written in various hands in Latin, 26 October 1523 - 1 February 1531. 189 folios. Written in contemporary hands on the outside front cover is 'fforncett', and on the inside back cover 'Soluciones debitorum domini'.

MS Add.5909 'Generalis supervicio omnium terrarum tenementorum et aliorum hereditamentorum tam liberorum quam nativorum pertinentium manerio predicto [i.e. de fforncett] per Johannem Tyler generosum', in Latin. 300 folios. On fos 315 and 361 is a list of contents. On fos i-vi are accounts in English for the years 1644-1645. Fo. vii is a leaf of a 16th century rental. Fos viii and ix are two vellum leaves of a late 13th century missal. On fo. 272 is a 16th century note signed R. Agar. At the foot of fo. vi are the names Tho. Tyndall and Robt Wade, and on fo. viv the signatures of Robt Paynell, Jo. Hawes, Jo. Frere and John Brewster 3 September 1646. The foliation is early and passes from 88 to 99, from 198 to 209, and from 298 to 304.

MS Add.5911 Court book of the manor of Forncett, Norfolk, in Latin, 1589 - 8 April 1641. Incomplete at the beginning, 444 folios. The names of Robert Hamond (fos 303, 323 and 418) and Robert Hornebye (fo. 399) occur as enrollers. Many folios are blank. The front cover is part of a compotus of Thomas Smyth.

MS Add.5912 Court book of the manor of Forncett, Norfolk, in Latin and English, 4 April 1642 - 5 April 1655. 311 folios. On fos i-iv are accounts of sums collected and paid by the town of Wroxham, 5 September 1645. On fos lxxv-lxxiiv, written in reverse, are similar accounts of articles delivered to the Commissioners by the parish of Wendling, Norfolk, 4 August 1645, signed (fo. lxxiiv) by Nicholas Hamond, curate, Thomas Markant, John Durrant, churchwarden, and Robert Poly, constable. Many folios are blank. Fos v-xxxviii and xl-lxx are blank. There is scribbling on fos xxxix and lxxi.

On fo. lxxxiiiv are scribblings, among them the following names: Thomas Bateson, Johannes Castleton, Baronet, and Henry Tyndall. On fos lxxxiv-lxxxvii is the certificate of the inhabitants of Rackheath, [Norfolk], in answer to the directions of the Committee, 3 September 1645, signed by William Alexander and William Howard, constables, John Sporl, churchwarden, Joseph Liddall and Thomas Eaton, overseers, John Ringald and Joseph Measant. Fos 390* and i-lxxxii are blank.

On fo. lx is part of a copy of a conveyance, scored through. On fos lxxiv and lxxv is part of a certificate. On fos lxxvii and lxxvi, written in reverse, is the answer of the inhabitants of [Drayton, Norfolk] to every direction [of the Parliamentary Committee], signed (fo. lxxiiiv) by Robert Dudgeon, John Segoe, John Gage and James Osborne. Fos iii-lix and lxi-lxxii are blank.
