Georg Zoaga: Topographie des Alten Roms

Georg Zoága (1755-1809), Danish archaeologist and numismatist, was born on 20 December 1755. He studied philosophy and the classics, and developed an interest in archaeology during visits to Italy. He eventually settled in Rome, where he received the patronage of Cardinal Stefano Borgia, who had earlier employed him to catalogue and describe his coin collection. Zoága continued to work in numismatics, and developed a high reputation for his rigorous and scientific approach. He died at Rome on 10 February 1809.

On p. ii is the following note: 'Diese Topographie ist von Zoága's Handschriften durch den Kammerherrn von Schmalensee als dieser im Jahr 1803 den Erbprinzen von Mechlenburg-Strelitz nach Rom begleitete abgeschreiben worden, und nach diesen Abschrift habe ich die gegenwärtige aufertigen lassen Die dazen gehörige Karte sich herr v. Schmalensee selbst jedoch unter Zoága's Anleitung entwerfen'.

The volume was formerly in the library of B.G. Niebuhr, before passing to the library of the Revd Robert Burn, fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. Presented to the Library by Mrs Burn and the Revd A.E. Burn, 1911.
