David James Stewart was born in London and educated privately. He was admitted a pensioner at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1833, at the age of 19, and matriculated in 1834 (B.A., 1839; M.A., 1842). He was ordained deacon in 1839, and priest in 1840. Stewart was curate of Adderbury, Oxfordshire, 1843-1848, vicar of Hillmarton, Wiltshire, 1849-1850, and honorary canon of Ely, 1893-1898. He was H.M. Inspector of Schools, 1851-1891. He died on 18 March 1898.

The notes were formerly the property of John Willis Clark. MSS.Add.5145 and 5146 were presented to Clark by Aubrey Stewart, son of David James Stewart, in 1905. Purchased by the Library in 1911.
