Content and context

The Council of the Senate, now known as simply the Council, was the most powerful committee in Cambridge University, responsible for submitting Graces (bills) to the Regent House.

William Magan Campion (1820-1896) was born in Ireland on 28 October 1820. He attended Queens' College, Cambridge, and was a Fellow, 1850-1892, mathematical lecturer, 1850-1853, President, 1892-1896, and Proctor, 1865. Campion was a member of the first Council of the Senate, and its Secretary in 1865. He was Rector of St Botolph's, Cambridge, 1862-1892, and a rural dean, 1870-1892, and Honorary Canon of Ely, 1879-1896. He died at Cambridge on 20 October 1896.

In the hand of W.M. Campion, 15 November 1856 - 3 October 1862, 110 folios. The entries from 18 November 1857 to 7 December 1860 are in shorthand. Another hand appears on fos 22v, 23 and 57. Attached to fo. 95 is a letter from J. Fuller to W.M. Campion, 2 December 1861.
