Content and context

Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), theologian, natural philosopher and scientist, was minister of Mill Hill Chapel, Leeds, 1767-73, companion to William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne, at Calne, Wiltshire, 1773-80, and minister of the New Meeting, Birmingham, 1780-91. The sermon was preached in all three places.

MS sermon The pleasure and advantages of a good conscience, on Acts 23 v.1, with endorsements 'Leeds Nov. 17th 1771', 'Calne 1775', NMB [New Meeting Birmingham] ...1783'; with letter, Swann Hurrell to Henry Bradshaw, 19 Nov. 1883, presenting sermon and two letters of Priestley, and a note of inscription on a silver inkstand presented to Priestley on his emigration to America in 1794 by 'some

members of the University of Cambridge'.

Presented by Swann Hurrell, 1883. The sermon and letters were inherited by Swann Hurrell from his cousin, Catherine Irene Finch (1800-83), Priestley's grandaughter.
