Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl (1806-1876), classical scholar, was born on 6 April 1806. He entered Leipzig University in 1825, before transferring to Halle the following year. He began his professional career at Halle, removing thereafter to Breslau, then Bonn, where he founded the school of classical scholarship. He became a professor at Leipzig in 1865, where he died on 9 November 1876. Ritschl was a specialist on Plautus, and produced works on Greek and Roman writers.
