Content and context

Robert Creighton (1593-1672), bishop of Bath and Wells, was born at Dunkeld, Perthshire, son of Thomas Creighton and Margaret Stuart. He graduated BA from Cambridge in 1618 and MA in 1621, becoming regius professor of Greek and public orator of the university and staying in those positions until his resignation in 1639. Creighton was given positions in Lincoln, Wells, Stowe, Huggate (Yorkshire), St Buryan (Cornwall), and Greenwich, but seemed to settle in Wells until approximately 1645. As a staunch Royalist, he was a member of the court of Charles II in his exile on the continent, and for his loyalty, the king appointed him dean of Wells from 1660. Creighton was elected as bishop of Bath and Wells on 25 May 1670, but passed away only two years later at Wells.
