Content and context

Transcribed by Patrick Mac Oghannain from the Louvain edition of 1643, 24 Jan. 1686. In Irish, with some notes and translations in English.

Also includes (pp. 174-80) 'Foras focal luighter libh', a metrical glossary, sometimes attributed to Sean mor O'Dubhagain (ed. W. Stokes, Transactions of the Philological Society 1891). The present copy contains 73 quatrains, arranged in the order in which they appear in Royal Irish Academy MS 23.L.21.

On loose sheets are 19th cent. English translations of O'Clery's dedication to Baothghalach Mac Aodhagain, bishop of Elphin, and of the preface. Occasional pencil notes in text are in the same hand.

pp. 187-91: scribbles in childish hands include names of Thomas ?Gibison, Dan Lynch, 10 Oct. 1789, and John Mac a Lindon, same date.

Monck Mason sale, 1858. From the library of William Reeves, bishop of Down, Connor and Dromore (d. 1892). Purchased by the Library from Bernard Quaritch, 27 Feb. 1893 (Cat. 132, lot 379).
