Sir Frederic Madden, (1801-1873), palaeographer and librarian, was born in Portsmouth on 16 February 1801, the son of Captain William John Madden (1757-1833), Royal Marines, and Sarah Carter Madden (1759-1833), daughter of the Revd Arnold Carter, a minor canon of Rochester Cathedral. He matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, in July 1825.
