Sir Frederic Madden, (1801-1873), palaeographer and librarian, was born in Portsmouth on 16 February 1801, the son of Captain William John Madden (1757-1833), Royal Marines, and Sarah Carter Madden (1759-1833), daughter of the Revd Arnold Carter, a minor canon of Rochester Cathedral. He matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, in July 1825. He was appointed assistant keeper in the department of manuscripts at the British Museum in February 1828, and promoted to keeper on 18 July 1837, resigning in 1866. He died in 1873.
Intended for publication as an appendix to Madden's edition of Matthew Paris' Historia Anglorum (Rolls Series 1866-9), but not printed, with descriptions of certain manuscripts.
